»»»»»»»» Noel Gourdin The River Lyrics - Download, Listen and Love ‘em!
I’ve read enough crazy interpretations of Noel Gourdin’s The River lyrics that tonight it was time to listen and listen and listen to The River
in my headphones and write them down myself.
Download the Mp3 of The River by Noel Gourdin
I even downloaded an MP3 of The River, which is now available.
Four songs from Noel Gourdin’s The River CD (when will that be available for sale?) are available to listen to online both here and here on Noel Gourdin’s MySpace page.
Healing water, flow over my soul…
So anyway, having “The River” playing over and over again in my ear feels strangely healing.
I know lots of folks will be drawn to him because of the heavy Christian influence, but the Pharisee-like ones will recoil (as part of me did in finger-wagging holier-than-thouness) at some of his other lyrics in other songs.
But I’m happy Noel Gourdin — with his Maxwell-ish falsetto — is going to blow up bigger than Beyonce’s Irreplaceable.
I hope he’ll draw some young thugged-out souls to Christ.
The River lyrics as I heard them over and over and over again:
(Scratchy old record playing)
Mmmmmmm
La la la la la la la la la
All right
La la la la la la la la la
Growing up
It was tough
We were glad for what little we had
I saw my share of old fair Mississippi
Dirt roads and Confederate flags
Every day my father would tell me:
“Son, run and don’t never come back”
That’s where I left my girl
That’s where my heart is at
And oh…
First chorus:
I held my breath when they dipped my head
Then I came up shiny and new (laid down my burdens…)
Found out about love in the back of my Impala
Where they laid my grandfather, too
Down by the river
Where black folks gather after Sunday service is thru
How the river runs to the ocean
I’ll be running right back to you
I got along
I’m movin’ on
I bandaged the scars up well
I think of her then I sit and I wait
For a card or a letter in the mail
I walk the beach
With the sand in my feet
Place my ear up to a shell
I wonder if you miss me, too?
‘Cause I been longin’ to get to you
I’m sick of staring out my window sill
I’m tired of hoping she remembers me still
I’m packing my bags, I said “I’m going back home,
to the place where I belong…”
The river…
And if she’s there when I get there
I’m never gonna leave her again
You see, she stole my heart
Down by the river
Second chorus:
I held my breath when they dipped my head
Then I came up shiny and new (Hallelujah!)
Found out about love in the back of my Impala
(Back seat of my ‘64 baby)
Where they laid my grandfather, too
Down by the river
Where black folks gather after Sunday service is thru
How the river runs to the ocean
I’ll be running right back to you
So I’m packing up my suitcase
Bought me a one-way fare
I’m leaving everything behind me
But in my heart I’ll always care
And I’ll still be right there…(Female voice)
Thank you, baby
‘Cause nothin’ can replace that part of my life
And oh…
Third chorus:
I held my breath when they dipped my head
Then I came up shiny and new (I came out a new man…)
Found out about love in the back of my Impala
Where they laid my grandfather, too
Down by the river
Where black folks gather after Sunday service is thru
How the river runs to the ocean
I’ll be running right back to you
Original August 1, 2007 article:
I first heard The River by Noel Gourdin day before yesterday.
So taken aback was I by the meaningful lyrics of Noel Gourdin’s The River…
I held my breath when they dipped my head
Then I came up shiny and new (Hallelujah!)
…that I — praise the Lord — figured out how to create this, the Noel Gourdin Official Fan Site.

Noel’s music is unique and refreshing just what we need playing on the radio. I think he brings a great variety of music to the table and I can’t wait to hear more of him. as for the comment […] I don’t know if he’s really feeling what he’s singing like he sings on The River. […] well I beg to differ when I listen to his music I feel every word he’s sayin. but I guess to each its own. GOD BLESS!

Who originally did this song? This version is hot!!! But it is a remake right?
September 26th, 2007 at 5:31 am
Hey Don -
Noel Gourdin and his writing partner originally did this song, according to published reports and interviews with the singer.
That’s a good sign that you thought “The River” was a remake.
Whenever I hear a song and think it’s a remake and it’s not, that’s usually a case of deja vu and indication that “The River” will be a big hit!
It will be so exciting the day we all watch Noel Gourdin perform “The River” on Oprah…
From my mind to God’s ear; He will perform it if it’s His will.

This is the most beautiful and prolific song I have ever heard. Mr. Gourdin The River brought tears to my eyes and my heart pains with love. I understand why my Momma left Mississippi and didn’t return til I was 18 Thank you so much for share your beautiful song.

I don’t know where to begin, well let me say this for someone to write a song like this they have no other choice but to feel every word that they have written this song have some meaning this song had me teary eyed this is what music is about feeling and if you’re not feeling this song you don’t have soul your understanding of music is lost. There’s not a song on the radio today that give me that feeling of what music stands for this guy has an old soul he puts you in that time when everything was going and in the south, this song makes you think ,makes your heart cry and your soul move.To Mr. Gourdin brother you’re bringing substance back to to R&B making old folk thing back to that good music keep doing what your doing and don’t change that style that you have.

Why haven’t we heard from him until now. These records label are really confused as to what the Consumer wants to listen. Personally, I think its time for the booty poppin songs to take a break. There is always room for booty poppin songs, but I am ready for some soul stirring R&B soul Hits. Noel is da truth. Epic really messed up with this artist. I want his CD to come up so that I can buy it. People please don’t bootleg his CD, go out and pay your money and support this Brotha!!

Thank you SO MUCH for making this song. The first time I heard it woke me out of my sleep and almost brought me to tears. It’s a beautiful piece of work. In the times of catch phrase songs w/the same overbearing beats, its really refreshing to hear something so inspirational. Again, thank you. Someone needs to tell Oprah about this dude.

Last April I needed some new music for my trip to Ghana. I downloaded about 50 songs from Itunes and one of the songs was The River. Played it on the plane all the way to Accra and the passengers as well as the flight attendants knew the words of the song before we landed. Everyone loved it.
Brother Noel you can not imagine how I longed I waited for this day to happen for you. I am crying tears of joy with you

I heard this song on Steve Harvey and haven’t been able to get it out of my mind. I had to search for the artist because I missed the intro. Once I found it, I stumbled on this link and can play it whenever I want now. Can’t wait to get his CD… it’s absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!!!!! And Steve Harvey’s correct when he says, if you don’t like this, you DON’T have soul!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 15th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
I heard this song first on the Steve Harvey morning show. I had not come out of a deep sleep until Steve replayed it AGAIN, and said, If you don’t like this one, you don’t have SOUL. I just laid there and cried and prayed. I had just recovered from my second heart attack. I got up and said, THANK YOU, JESUS, THANK YOU, JESUS. This is an absolutely beautiful, the most inspirational uplifting song. I give thanks to GOD, for this young mans talent and ask GOD to please allow him to continue using his GIFT!!

The first time I heard, “The River” was on XM Radio on the plane. I fell in love instantly but I didn’t hear it again. Until one morning I was listening to the Steve Harvey Morning Show. Words can’t describe how excited I was to hear the song again. Steve blew it up so hard that my local radio station has been playing it a lot outside of Mr. Harvey’s show. How do I get this album? God Bless you young man for bringing GREAT music back to mainstream radio. Keep up the awesome work and I look forward to hearing more from you.

I heard this on the Steve Harvey show also and fell in love immediately. It took a lot for me to find it! When I searched for “The River” I got church songs and Bruce Springsteen. I am glad to finally find it. When I googled Steve Harvey and The River I finally found it. Thank God for Gourdin and for Steve Harvey bringing this soul to our ears again! Loving IT!

When I heard this song,I teared up. It’s an instant classic.
March 18th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
I first heard it on XM radio. Fell in love with the song. Now I can not wait to listen to it. I went searching for it at FYE the other day. When does it become available for retail. I have to purchase many copies, continue to make good music for appreciated listeners. Thanks Steve Harvey for showing us the Real R&B still exist……
March 24th, 2008 at 8:02 am
i heard this on steve harvey as well… unfortunately, i only caught the end and he didn’t repeat who this was. i tried my best to reemember some of the lyrics so i can google it, but i lost track and forgot about it… fast forward to today, i heard it again on steve’s show but made a point to remember parts of the hook and here i am now.
this has to be the frist time i actually bought music online. well worth the 99c. its amazing to see this “grass roots” effort by fans to dig up everything we can about noel. its impossible to listen to this song and not feel uplifted.
i think i was meant to get a hold of this song… i hardly ever listen to steve’s morning show for various reasons, but i decided to glance over to the station and now im glad i did.

Where can I buy the album by Noel Gourdin. His sond fills my soul. I’m 62 and the lyrics, rhythm and feeling he brings up, while sad, fills my heart with joy or remembrance.
Please tell me where I can find the entire cd.
Thanks.

I heard this song during the summer of 07. I googled it and even called a record store and came up with nothing. I’m so glad that someone else has caught on to the beautiful voice and lyrics of this song. Can’t wait until the album comes out.

A friend of mine played “I Fell” for me on his computer and I loved the song. I have been unable to find it since then and I want to share it with my wife. It may have been only a small part of the song, but when I type in the title and Noel Gourdin, nothing comes up about that song. Help!
April 10th, 2008 at 11:00 am
One of my friends did not hear his song until I played it for her and she loved it. I been playing it for everyone just trying to get the word out. I suggest we write to the other local radio stations and put in a request for them to play songs in support of this brother, specifically “The River.” He is definitely very musically talented and his music should be broadcasted on other stations.
April 11th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
I heard the song “SORRY” today! I loved it!

“The River” really touched my soul. When I heard this song, which was on 107.5, I stayed in my vehicle until this song was over just so I could hear who the artist was. Sweetie, you keep singing this kind of music, and you will definitely win the hearts of many people. When I got home, I told my sisters, children, and friends about it. “May God continue to bless you”.
April 16th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
I first heard “the river” on the “The Steve Harvey Morning Show”. Steve heard somewhere and he said he had to play. He plays it all the time.I love it.

That song “The River” It’s Powerful, soul searching song that brought tears to my eyes.Because parents told me the same thing, so I joined the military and left home. That song brings back a flood of memories of growing up in the south in the 60’s & 70’s. Thank you for reminding me.

Finally, an R&B singer singing real music! I’m in my late 20’s, but I’ve had the pleasure of being exposed to all types of music, escpecially “old school”. Sadly, the R&B music being played today is nothing like the music of before. It lacks depth. When I heard “The River”, I stopped and just listened. It is a beautiful song that embodies what R&B really is. You’ve got a hit, Mr. Gourdin!

Wow, can’t wait for the CD to be release, this artist has something really great and one beautiful song on his hands. I think that is a song that will be around for a long time. Those who hear it will have something to share and sing together. Noel I would like to say God speed man you done it on this one…

At first I thought this song was done by De’Angelo. I said it sounds like D is back on track, but then I found out it was Noel Gourdin and I thought he has a good sound. I luv this song

I am completely in love with this song. I may have cried the first time I heard it on the Steve Harvey in the Morning Show (my fav). But I just recently got baptized of my own will, and the song represents a lot for me and as a writer myself the words reach out so much. Plus on top of that He is a great singer the song is just good ya’ll. Thank good for good talent and keeping some aspects of music and soul alive. Bless, Carra D G

I am part of the new generation but I listen to the oldies that come on stations such as l05.1 more than anything else. This song doesn’t compare to the r ‘n b music out nowadays; music like “The River” isn’t heard often and this is phenomenal. I haven’t been around long enough to reminisce on the “old days” but this song truely reaches the soul, I embraced this song the instant I heard it. I was really touched by it when I first heard it and it brought tears to my eyes. All I can say is this song will definitely be a hit, this man is most talented, may God bless him!

I love listening to this song! It’s very soul stirring. In searching for the lyrics this morning, I saw the video. It was disappointing. I do not care for the video it does an injustice to the song. I’m tired of the same old venue of scantily clad young women and urban scenes. There is so much soul, religion and positive reflections of black family traditions and nostalgic South in the lyrics. Some of these images would have made a better video. My 12 and 13 year old daughters made similar comments about the video, even the children are tired of this monolithic view producers are portraying in black music videos. We deserve more.

I love this song The River. I understand the meaning and I love his voice and this song. I can’t wait util his CD comes out I have been looking everywhere for it. I was told that it would be on sale to the public on July 22nd. Can’t wait to hear the rest of your CD Noel.
The radio station plays it hear and alot of people have been calling in asking “who sings that song”? Where can I purchase it? It is already a hit in Indy.
Good Luck Noel

I FIRST HEARD NOEL GOURDIN’S THE RIVER AFTER MY RETURN FROM IRAQ. I WAS ARRIVING AT THE AIRPORT IN KENTUCKY TO PICK UP MY DAUGHTER FOR OUR FAMILY REUNION FOR THE JULY 4 WEEKEND. MY LADY AND HER SISTER WERE DRIVING AND WE CAUGHT THE LAST PART OF THE SONG AND WE ALL WERE TAKEN ABACK AND IMMEDIATELY LOVED IT AND WONDERED WHO WERE SINGING IT BUT THE DG(HIP HOP) NEVER DID SAY. SO ALL I COULD DO AFTER THAT WAS MAKE IT MY PRIORITY TO FIND THE CD WHICH I DID.
THE SONG THE RIVER IS VERY REFRESHING AS IT REMINDS ME OF THE PAST WHERE BLACK FOLK WERE TOGETHER AND DEPENDED ON EACH OTHER AND WE WERE ALL THAT WE HAD. IT TRULY HAS BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES EACH TIME THAT I HAVE HEARD IT BECAUSE I CAN RELATE AS I LEFT MY GIRL BEFORE BUT SHE WAS NOT THERE WHEN I RETURNED(VIETNAM). I CAN ALSO RELATE BECAUSE MY FAMILY IS FROM MISSISSIPPI TOO.
THANK YOU NOEL AND MAY YOU INSPIRE YOUNG BLACK FOLK TO COME BACK TO THE RIVER TO BE BLESSED AND BORN AGAIN AS A NEW MAN AND WOMAN.
GOG BLESS AND KEEP THE FAITH.

I just heard the River on Wrou.92 Fm. I was captured by the music and the lyrics. I am an African American female born in Mississippi and I could relate to that so very. At age 60 there is not much music comming out that can capture the spirit and soul any more. The lyric were soulful and the music was very touching. I am looking forward to more of Mr. Gourdins music. After I heard it I waited to hear the name of the artist, when I didn’t I went on the internet and typed in the song title into Google and behold! It came right up. I was so glad because I wanted to know the lyrics and something about the artist. Thank You Mr. Gourdin for such inspiring music.

I love this song it touchs mine and my husband’s heart that we listen to it everytime it comes on the radio and we both have the cd in our vehicles to listen to when we are having diffculty with stress from our jobs or our children. My oldest son is right now over in IRAQ doing his job for the government. And we pray every day that he and all the troops come home safe. PLEASE KEEP THEM ALL IN YOUR PRAYERS.
